A dedicated T1 line is a high speed 1.54 Mbps circuit which is comprised of 24 individual DS-O circuits. Each DS-O circuit has a speed of 64 Kbps. For perspective, your home telephone line is likely a DS-O line. Dedicated T1 lines are also interchangeably referred to as T1 or DS1. Dedicated T1 is carried through two twisted pairs of copper wires. Virtually, all residences and businesses currently have two pairs of copper wires running to them. T1 lines are capable of delivering 1.54 Mbps simultaneously in both directions, one direction for each pair of copper lines. Because dedicated T1 service is repeater driven (signal is digitally reestablished about every 6000 feet), it is available several miles from telephone central offices. For this reason, T1 service can be available to virtually all businesses in the US. T1 lines are dedicated, in that they are not shared like DSL, always connected, and are also extremely stable. Most reputable providers include service level agreements which guarantee the reliability of the T1 circuits they offer. There are several types of T1 line. These include: full (1.54 Mbps), fractional (commonly 128 Kbps to 756 Kbps), burstable (less expensive for companies which normally do not need a full T1, but at times due to peak work loads, need a burst to full T1 bandwidth), integrated (one T1 line comprised of any combination the types of T1 listed here), channelized DS1 (a type of integrated T1), point-to-point (a direct private circuit between to locations), data (internet), local voice (telephone), long distance (for lower long distance phone rates), pri (voice service which a myriad of added features), and frame relay (T1 bandwidth from a shared network). Each of these types of T1 has advantages over the others, depending on the specific needs of your company. Use Long Distance T1 and Save Money

Long distance T1 is an excellent solution for companies which pay more than $500 per month for their long distance telephone service. $500 is provided as a break even point because a long distance T1 circuit costs between $100 and $300 per month, depending on the location of your company. Businesses which can justify the monthly reoccurring charge of a long distance circuit, will experience significantly reduced per minute charges for their domestic long distance usage. For example, businesses which use switched long distance service commonly pay between three and six cents per minute for their outgoing out of state, and incoming out of state toll free (800#) calls. With a long distance t1 circuit however, these companies can reduce these costs to a penny a minute for outgoing out-of-state calls, and 1.2 cents per minute for incoming toll free lines. There is also significant savings for in-state long distance with a long distance T1, however, specifics cannot be provided in this article due varying tariffs on in-state long distance rates, which vary in each state. These tariffs only apply to in-state long distance calls. They do not apply to out of state calls.

Each long distance T1 provides 24 phone circuits. Each long distance T1 PRI provides 23 usable voice circuits. The limitation of long distance t1 is that it does not facilitate free local calling. If free local calls are needed, then local voice T1 might be a better option. If the majority of a company's calls are long distance, then integrated local and long distance t1 might be preferable, or a long distance T1 in conjunction with a few POTS (Plain old telephone service) lines.
